Walking/Cycling the Great Glen Way...

Our picture shows the Great Glen Way between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston as it runs along forest tracks above Loch Ness. Much of the route is like this with breaks in the trees giving good views of the Loch and the hills beyond.

About a mile before reaching Invermoriston, the track becomes a path descending steeply to join the small metalled road at Dalcataig (OS grid ref 401 175). After a further 3/4 mile, the Great Glen Way passes our door in sight of the old Telford bridge over the river Moriston where the route enters the village.

We are located at OS grid reference 418 165.

...Stay with us in Invermoriston

When planning your stages, Invermoriston is a natural choice for an overnight stop as it is the main accommodation centre on the route between Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit.

We welcome walkers and designed the Studios accommodation with them in mind.

Each Studio has its own separate kitchen so there is somewhere to prepare a snack, hang wet clothes and a real sink for washing your socks. (Plus use of our tumble dryer on request.)

And our in room "Breakfast Basket" option means that you can leave as early as you like without waiting for dining room times. We will also prepare packed lunches for you on request and although we don't do evening meals we won't let you starve if you arrive too late to eat out. See our B&B page.

Invermoriston has a Post Office/shop and a choice of restaurants including the Glenmoriston Arms Hotel which has a Restaurant within 500m of Lann Dearg.

Route Planning

When you are planning the stages of your walk you will find accommodation on the route itself at South Laggan, Fort Augustus and Invermoriston. Depending on your ability, you may find that South Laggan to Invermoriston is a bit too far and decide to stop over at Fort Augustus. This leaves a relatively short next stage to Invermoriston with no other accommodation centre before Drumnadrochit.

If you stay with us, you have your own self contained apartment and you can arrive early, provided you let us know in advance. Then use the studio as a home from home for the rest of the day without feeling "in the way". Each Studio has TV and comfortable easy chairs to relax in.

From 2008 a new link path has been introduced between the forest track and the Dalcataig road that has shortened the stage from Fort Augustus to Invermoriston by nearly 2 miles. This makes the walk from Fort Augustus to here quite short and your may consider to extending the stage and continuing to Alt Sigh which is a further 4 miles. Just book in as you pass the door and walk on to Alt Sigh at OS Grid Ref 458 191, where access to the A82 is only a short diversion from the track. We will pick you up there and take you back the next morning.

If you would like to stay 2 nights with us and we will pick up between Laggan and Drumnadrochit.

Or why not plan a rest day. There is a bus service within 400m that will take you on an excursion to the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye if you want a break from walking and take in the spectacular scenery through Glenmoriston and Glen Shiel without lifting a boot.

When to Come?

We will be pleased to see you at any time but we think that April, May and October can be really nice in the Highlands and should not be discounted. Although the days are a bit shorter, these months produce some spectacularly clear conditions with a real alpine quality to the air and temperatures that are just right for walking. Plus the midges are not a nuisance. The autumn colours are well worth waiting for and are at their best in mid October. But please don't blame us if it rains too, the good news is that it can be wet at Fort Augustus and sunny at Invermoriston. If you're walking in the winter months our heating system is very effective.
